Safe & Informed: your news, your way, anywhere. News reader with voice, radio and CarPlay.

If you already use Feedly or Inoreader, you've done the hard part. You picked your sources, sorted them into folders, and built a feed that's actually yours. This post isn't about convincing you to throw that away. It's about the part of the day those apps weren't really built for: when you're driving, on a train, or walking, and you'd rather listen than read.

That's the gap Safe & Informed is built around. Below is how to bring your feeds over in about a minute, what you get, and, just as important, what you don't.

In short: Safe & Informed is an audio-first RSS reader for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. You can import your Feedly or Inoreader feeds with an OPML file, listen to them for free with your phone's voice, and use them on CarPlay and Android Auto. It works without an account. It isn't a full replacement for a research tool like Feedly or Inoreader, and many people use it alongside one.

Moving your feeds takes about a minute

Both Feedly and Inoreader let you export your subscriptions as an OPML file. It's a small file with the list of your feeds and the folders they sit in. Look for "Export OPML" in their settings.

Then, in Safe & Informed, choose Import OPML and pick the file. Your sources and folders come over as they are. No account to create, no email to confirm. The same import works for NetNewsWire or any other reader that exports OPML.

After that, adding new sources is easier than copying feed addresses around. When you're on a site you like, tap Share in your browser and send the page to Safe & Informed. The app looks for the site's feed, checks that it works, and adds it. This works on iPhone, iPad and Android.

What you get

Your feeds, read out loud, for free. Every article can be read with your phone's built-in voice, offline, with no daily limit and no subscription. Speed control, skip, sleep timer, and it picks up where you left off.

A proper app on your car's screen. Safe & Informed runs on CarPlay and Android Auto as a full audio app. You can browse your categories, your queue and your podcasts on the dashboard, and control everything from the steering wheel.

Ways to listen that go beyond one article at a time.

Downloads for when there's no signal. Save a category or your queue before a flight or an underground commute and listen offline.

Privacy you don't have to configure. No account, no sign-up. Your data stays on your device or in your own iCloud. On the free tier, ads are contextual, with no advertising ID and no tracking.

No cap on sources. The free tier has no limit on how many feeds you follow.

Pro, if you want it. Pro adds a natural AI voice, short summaries of any article, Daily Briefing and Radio, For You recommendations calculated on your device, and Ask, where you can ask what's new on a topic and hear the answer. You don't need Pro to listen. It's for people who want the listening to sound more like a person than a phone.

What you won't get

Feedly and Inoreader are excellent tools for reading and research, and they do things Safe & Informed doesn't. Better to know before you try it:

If your day revolves around those, keep using them. Inoreader can already read articles aloud too, and if that covers what you need, that's fine.

The setup that makes the most sense

For most people who already pay for a reader, the honest answer is: use both.

Keep Feedly or Inoreader for reading and research at your desk. Use Safe & Informed for the hours when your eyes and hands are busy: the drive, the commute, the walk, the flight. The OPML import means you don't have to rebuild anything, and the free tier means trying it costs you nothing.

And if you've never paid for a reader and just want your own sources without an algorithm deciding what you see, the free tier gives you unlimited feeds, unlimited listening and no account.
